1 week with Lourdes Cruz in the Philippines…
08/01/2010
Every year, the L’Oréal Foundation sends a team to meet the new Award Laureates in their countries, to get to know them and to better understand their research and the environment in which they evolve. During these visits, video and photo portraits are created.
In November 2009, a team left for the Philippines to meet with the 2010 Laureate for Asia / Pacific. Prof. Cruz is an internationally recognized expert in marine toxicology. The objective of the trip was to follow her during a week, in her lab with her colleagues, at home with her family and friends.
When the team left Paris for the Philippines, that was the plan: a documentary on one of the 2010 laureates. Exciting but work. Once in the jungle, far away from Manila, the team discovered how different things can be from initial expectations. They met a great scientist and an extraordinary human being, an iron personality and a smiling face. Professor Cruz is a role model not just for young scientists but for all of us. She believes that science can change the world today and she never gives up. Based on her scientific research, she launched a project to preserve the territory and to help local communities maintain economic autonomy.
Getting to know Lourdes Cruz, her family, her students, her team, and the people of the village, was a unique experience. Here are some backstage photos that will help you enter the world of “Mme Luly” – as everyone calls her. In March, immediately after the Award ceremony, you will see her video portrait and will even better understand how very special Professor Cruz is….
