In treating a large number of patients, Nagwa Abdel Meguib has studies genetic malformations, which are common in her country and affect certain populations of the Mediterranean basin. Her clinical and biochemical observations of rare genetic syndromes leading to mental illness and Trisomy 21 (Down's syndrome) have constitued a significant database for fundamental genetic researchers.
